The health of ash trees is important for several reasons: Ecological Balance: Ash trees are an integral part of many ecosystems, providing habitat and food for various species of insects, birds, and mammals. If ash trees decline or disappear due to diseases or other issues, it can disrupt the ecological balance and negatively impact the biodiversity of the ecosystem. Carbon Sequestration: Like all trees, ash trees play a role in carbon sequestration by absorbing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere during photosynthesis. This helps mitigate the effects of climate change by reducing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. Aesthetic and Recreational Value: Ash trees are often planted for their aesthetic value in urban and suburban areas. They contribute to the overall beauty of landscapes and provide shade. Additionally, ash wood is used for various purposes, including furniture and sports equipment. The loss of healthy ash trees can impact the aesthetic appeal of an area and affect recreational activities. Soil and Water Conservation: Trees, including ash trees, play a crucial role in soil and water conservation. Their roots help stabilize soil, preventing erosion, and they contribute to water filtration and retention. Healthy ash trees can help maintain the health and integrity of ecosystems by supporting these natural processes. Economic Impact: Ash trees have economic significance in various industries. The wood of ash trees is used for making furniture, tool handles, and sports equipment like baseball bats. The decline of ash trees due to diseases such as emerald ash borer can have economic repercussions on industries that rely on ash wood. Cultural and Historical Significance: In some regions, ash trees hold cultural and historical significance. They may be featured in folklore, art, or traditional practices. The loss of these trees can impact the cultural and historical heritage of a community. Air Quality: Trees, including ash trees, contribute to improved air quality by absorbing pollutants and releasing oxygen. Healthy trees can help mitigate the negative effects of air pollution, benefiting both human and environmental health. Given the various ecological, economic, and societal benefits associated with ash trees, their health is crucial for maintaining the overall well-being of ecosystems and the communities that depend on them. Unfortunately, the health of ash trees has been threatened in some regions by pests and diseases, such as the emerald ash borer, highlighting the need for conservation efforts and proper management practices. Our Head Tree Surgeon Macauley Pryde shows how important it is to check the health of your trees. You can see the extent of the ash dieback in the video here. This mature tree in the Newtown of Edinburgh if left un-checked would become a risk for residents and the local community. Do you need hedges removed and trees planted in Edinburgh?Leylandii Hedging is a common sight in many gardens in the UK- Its cheap, it grows quickly (up to 15 meters in 16 years) and it is evergreen. This means it provides very effective screening and privacy all year round. However, it is not without its draw backs. Leylandii when not properly maintained can grow taller than your house and encroach on your neighbour’s property! Another issue is when not properly maintained you are also limited with how aggressively you can cut it- go too far and you ‘brown’ the hedge i.e., send it into shock preventing regrowth in that area. Many leylandii’s we have removed have been due neglect, disputes with neighbours and/or the council! Before and after photos of the leylandii hedging being removed and yew samplings being planted. So, our client decided to remove the young leylandii hedge which was previously in place
and instead replant with yew hedging as well as smarten up the edging and the borders. Yew hedging much the same as leylandii is evergreen and can grow to a large size, so it functions well as all year-round screening. Unlike leylandii it can tolerate hard pruning and is slower growing averaging between 20cm-40cm per year. Yew is also very low maintenance requiring only one cut per year however with regular maintenance can also be grown into intricate shapes. Yew is one of the longest living trees in the UK with the oldest specimen located in Scotland which is estimated to be 1,500-3,000 years old. We started first began with digging out the old hedging and turning over the soil. We then mixed through new rich organic matter and compost with the newly turned over bed mixing well to provide the ideal conditions for planting. We then started on the garden edging we had just shy of 5 meters of aircraft grade aluminium edging to go it provides extremely durable border edging and due to the flexible nature of the metal it can be manipulated and easily shaped to form smooth and classic lines. Easily installed we cut out the new border and simply joined together the edging giving the bed a definitive border with the lawn. Then our lead gardener decided on the placement and spacing between the yew shrubs- once he was happy the yew shrubs started to go in. Once in their holes the soil was packed in hard around it to keep the roots healthy. We finished off with a dash of water to help the new hedging take route in its new home.
